Put renewal dates, obligations, credits and invoice checks under named ownership to protect the value already negotiated. ## Full Content # The Contract Is Signed. The Value Is Still at Risk. Signing is a milestone. It is not the end of the commercial job. After signature, the organisation still has to deliver, measure and enforce what it agreed. If nobody owns the obligations, renewal dates, service credits and price changes, the contract can quietly drift away from the business case. World Commerce & Contracting's work on the procurement value gap focuses on value lost after award and the practices organisations can use to recover it. The operational point is straightforward: terms need an owner and a review rhythm, not just a place in a repository. Connect supplier commitments to the internal team that must confirm delivery. Connect customer commitments to the team that must protect margin and service quality. Do not build a catalogue for its own sake. Start with the terms that can change cash, service, risk or the right to exit: renewal and notice periods, indexation, volume bands, rebates, service levels, acceptance criteria, audit rights and termination triggers. Capture them in a form people can act on. ## Treat renewal as a decision, not a diary alert A calendar reminder that says “renewal approaching” is too weak. The owner needs enough time to check performance, forecast demand, test alternatives, challenge pricing and secure internal approval. Record the decision and the evidence behind it. If the business intends to exit or renegotiate, assign the work early enough to make that choice real. ![Contract data connected to owners, dates and commercial decisions](https://static.prod-images.emergentagent.com/jobs/sched-2866d31f-92d1-431d-ac9f-1a8d77fdfd4c-1791360060030/images/e3c1da9467f371cfe1fc2526ddf92784dd5e3aeb66d062b4607f0882cf8f3f25.jpeg) ## Reconcile what was promised with what was paid At agreed review points, compare invoices and performance records with the contract. Test whether credits, rebates or service remedies were triggered and claimed where appropriate. Investigate recurring exceptions. A missed credit is not merely an administrative error if it repeats across a portfolio. Keep a clear audit trail: the term, the event, the calculation, the decision and the person who approved it. If the contract wording is ambiguous, route it for the right commercial or legal judgement. Do not automate an assumption and call it control. ![Evidence-led contract value assurance from obligation to invoice](https://static.prod-images.emergentagent.com/jobs/sched-2866d31f-92d1-431d-ac9f-1a8d77fdfd4c-1791360060030/images/49f4df5335fc5436e463e74f692329eb48c7c6e78e1e9b343d1284935096a038.jpeg) ## Set one control standard across the portfolio Use a consistent minimum record, but scale review intensity to value, risk and complexity. Give leaders a short view of upcoming decisions, unresolved exceptions, supplier performance and value at risk. Escalate what needs a decision. Suppress the noise. The ROI case is not a fashionable dashboard. It is better use of the commercial terms already negotiated, fewer avoidable surprises and earlier action when performance slips.
