# Your Contract Is Signed. Now Prove It Is Being Run. **Category:** CONTRACTS **Author:** John Hotham, CEO, Simplif-i **Published:** 2026-10-08 **Read Time:** 5 min read ## Summary A signed contract does not deliver value by itself. Assign every material obligation, renewal and commercial change to an owner, evidence source and decision date. ## Full Content # Your Contract Is Signed. Now Prove It Is Being Run. A signature is not a control. It is the point at which operational responsibility begins. If nobody can tell you who owns a delivery obligation, when a renewal decision is due or what evidence supports a supplier credit, the contract is not being managed. It is being stored. That gap creates avoidable cost, missed income and disputes that are harder to resolve because the evidence is scattered. ![Contract obligations linked to owners and milestones](https://static.prod-images.emergentagent.com/jobs/sched-2866d31f-92d1-431d-ac9f-1a8d77fdfd4c-1791446460045/images/bca47652b5dd83d3edfaf40f8a4f0de24fa062a808f97004a3ef9aabddbda26c.jpeg) ## Start with obligations, not folders Extract the commitments that can change cash, service or risk: pricing adjustments, service levels, delivery milestones, indexation, rebates, audit rights, notice periods and termination conditions. Record the clause, accountable owner, due date, evidence required and escalation route. Do not build a register that nobody uses. Start with the contracts that matter most by spend, revenue, operational dependency or exposure. Give the finance, procurement, legal and operational teams a shared view of what is due and what is overdue. World Commerce & Contracting has published research on value erosion in contracting. Its more recent material discusses an average value erosion estimate of 8.6%, while noting the older 9.2% figure was based on earlier research. Treat those as study findings, not a guaranteed loss rate for your business. The practical point is simpler: unmanaged contract performance can leave value unrealised. For each obligation, specify what proves completion: an approved change note, service report, acceptance record, invoice adjustment or documented review. Set a clear owner for gathering it and a reviewer for exceptions. Then connect contract data to the work people already do. A missed notice date should reach the decision-maker before the window closes. A service failure should link to the relevant remedy and the evidence needed to enforce it. A pricing change should reconcile to the approved terms before payment. ## Put renewal decisions on the calendar early Renewals are commercial decisions, not diary administration. Give the business time to assess performance, compare alternatives, negotiate and secure approvals. Record the decision and the rationale. If the contract rolls over by default, make that exposure visible well before the notice period. ![Renewal dates and supplier performance connected to an executive control view](https://static.prod-images.emergentagent.com/jobs/sched-2866d31f-92d1-431d-ac9f-1a8d77fdfd4c-1791446460045/images/ff7dac19b826e0c5497d074f1c5cd7abcf6381a5d6a8683f4afc11e7bdf681aa.jpeg) ## Measure what changes the outcome Track a small set of operational measures: obligations with named owners, upcoming decisions, overdue evidence, unresolved exceptions and realised credits or savings. Use the data to prioritise intervention, not to manufacture a dashboard full of green indicators. The return is not another repository. It is fewer missed commitments, earlier commercial action and a defensible record when performance is challenged. Simplif-i helps organisations bring obligations, owners and evidence into one governed workflow. The discipline still matters: someone must act on what the system exposes. Start with your top contracts. Name the owner. Put the next decision date on the record. Then test whether the evidence exists. --- Source: https://simplif-i.com/api/blog/readable/contracts/contract-value-starts-after-signature-20261008 Web Version: https://simplif-i.com/blog/contracts/contract-value-starts-after-signature-20261008 © Simplif-i - Unified Business Management Platform
